Petit Martinique news - be always the first to know
In the small fishing community of Petite Martinique opportunities are limited. Locals have learned that due to the size of the population one has to be economical. Hiring professionals from overseas to build a boat, build houses and install plumbing or electrical installations to a Petite Martiniquan is financially prohibitive. The money that will be paid to the foreign professional will be used to buy more materials. So, how do Petite Martiniquans get the work done? They do it themselves. Petite Martiniquans are finding out that they are all multi-skilled people who take great pride in their work. A local fisherman would first need a boat to go fishing, so he builds his very own boat. With no formal education or experience of boat building he starts to build, working with no scaled plans, he builds a boat entirely from his head working with the simple idea of what a boat should look like, eventually ending up with a masterpiece; a beautiful boat that attracts and encourages people from neighboring islands to pay our local boat builder to build one exactly like it for them. Mostly all the small fishing boats that are built on Petite Martinique today are built by its owner here on the island. The same goes for cargo vessels and larger fishing vessels. One such event is in motion today where a Mr. Francis Deroche from Sugar Hill is building his second fishing vessel. Mr. Francis began the construction of his boat in February 2007 and is aiming for completion by July or August. His motor vessel will be built specifically for tuna fishing, a trade which is dominating the fishing industry at this time. Mr. Deroche’s first successful boat building project produced a beautiful motorboat he named Ability; approximately 34th feet long by 10ft wide, not a very big boat, but one that was ideal for him at the time. Now, with rising prices and VAT soon to be implemented, he aims to bring in a little more that his usual fish catch. His new boat will be a 45ft by 14ft motor vessel with a similar design to Ability. He is doing all the work on his own like any other local would do; from setting the keel in place to putting the stem post on one end of the keel to placing the stern frame on the other end. He then makes his center frame, followed by the bow frame. He puts ‘ribbons’ on both sides of the boat then ‘timbers off’, eventually ‘benzing off’ or ‘planking’ as it is better known which is the placing of boards on the sides of the boat. In finalizing he does the structuring of the deck formation (‘beeming’). He builds the house frame then his deck work, eventually ‘planking’ from the bottom edge to the keel and finally corking, sanding and painting.
